The Zamość fortress was not conquered by the Cossack and Tartar’s forces during the Chmielnicki uprising or by the Swedes during the Deluge. The city was surrounded by a modern fortification system with bastions and three gates, i.e. Lublin Gate, Szczebrzyn Gate and Lviv Gate (the fourth gate, so called New Lublin Gate, was built in the 19th century). The Zamość fortress was not conquered by the Cossack and Tartar’s forces during the Chmielnicki uprising or by the Swedes during the Deluge. A significant part of defensive walls were demolished just in the second half of the 19th century. The history of the fortress is illustrated by the exhibition in the Colours and Arms Museum in the Arsenal. The chancellor armoury, built by the side of the palace in 1582-84, was a place where the weapons conquered by Jan Zamoyski in numerous wars were collected.
